Ten years ago, "online car insurance quotes" meant that the agents you called had email addresses, and sent quotes to prospective clients that way, rather than a bundle of paper sent through the post office. Still, though, the process started with at least a voice-to-voice telephone conversation if not a personal appointment.

If a potential client wouldn't personally come in to the office for a meeting, most insurance agents, back then, wouldn't even consider giving them a quote. It used to be ridiculous to consider that agents wouldn't use their greatest strategy for obtaining customers.

It's not like that anymore. These days, the agents of the past have given way to automated web sales which concentrate on price rather than the agent-customer relationship. Young urbanites find the shift to the Internet particularly handy, as it is their preferred form of media. Older, less tech-savvy customers will gradually have to look online too as more and more companies focus on web sales and agents have less to offer in comparison.

Online car insurance quotes have gained in popularity, though, as people continue to fill their days with more and more activities, and have become used to making major purchases without meeting a salesperson. Clients have become more aware of the terminology and options available to them, and have come to demand more self-service than ever before.

This has all served to make formerly unknown car insurance firms into viable entities. Every customer online started looking for a free auto insurance quote with no strings attached, and true discount auto insurance - before the market leaders were prepared to offer them. By focusing on this change in customer appetites, small companies were able to become national players.

Keep in mind: Competition is in the consumer's best interest. Knowing that, it doesn't seem like a bad thing that these days every US insurance company seems to offer online car insurance quotes. This is because the huge market leaders have caught up.

It is in your best interest to spend a bit of time comparing the different offers of discount car insurance. Even though pronouncements of "big savings" and "free quotes" have become commonplace, just ten years ago it used to take a lot longer to search for deals; and even though technology may have changed to make your searching more convenient, there are still great companies out there fighting for your business. So take the time to consider all of your options.

Online car insurance quotes have come a long way in the past decade. What started as a way to get paperwork to consumers more quickly while still providing customer service has transformed into an online phenomenon. Free auto insurance quotes through traditional and discount car insurance companies have taken the salesperson out of the picture more and more. Consumers should still take the time to carefully compare quotes and customer service and remember that just because it can be done quickly, it doesn't mean that it should be a snap decision.
